We're stoked about what Utopia Joe is cooking up for our new furnished model. To say he's doing 2 "artistic pieces" for the model would be selling his work short. Let's just say they're extremely creative "hardware integrations" that you won't wan to miss.

The Mello Model is about to be...unchained.

Utopia Joe is a reality show about an Oklahoma Artist and his wife. Together, they create amazing art projects, weaving together humor, music, and passion, into an honest, edgy and smart process show.

HGTV - The Utopia Chair

Utopia Chair

Guest Joe Bohrer, a.k.a. "Utopia Joe" designs an unconventional yet functional utopia chair.

Project by Joe Bohrer, a.k.a. "Utopia Joe" from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
Joe Bohrer grew up loving all things about classic cars: the colors, the lines and the way they made him feel. Art has always played a part in his life, just like the cars, but it's only been in the last few years that he has found a way to bring these passions together. He calls it his "urban art" which for him is a magical melding of artistic vision and function. He builds everyday chairs that are cool like classic cars, and they look like 'em, too!

Materials:
MDF- Medium Density Fiberboard for the chair's back and base
foam
faux fur
metal brackets and bolts
jigsaw
sander
body grinder
chair templates
sandpaper
drill
pencil
permanent marker
oil based wood stain
spray paint
staple gun
ratchet wrench
Figure A
1. Design and sketch the chair on MDF.
Figure B
2. Cut out one back and three base pieces using a jigsaw.
3. Sand the edges with the hand and power sander.
4. Draw additional detailed designs on the chair backing with a pencil.
Figure C
5. Cut V-shape groove lines with a utility knife. This will separate the backing of the chair into two sections. Both sections will be painted different colors.
6. Sand the groove smooth with a small piece of sandpaper.
Figure D
7. Detail one section of the backing using a body grinder. Leave the other section smooth to provide contrast.
8. Drill nut and bolt holes where the chair will be attached.
Figure E
9. Mask off backing then spray paint the smooth section red and the grinded area black. Let dry.
10. Stain all base pieces. Dry completely.
Figure F
11. Sand the backing and other chair pieces by hand to rough up the look of the chair.
12. Add details to the back with colored pencils and permanent markers. Highlight specific areas along the edges as desired.
Figure G
13. Assemble the chair using the one-piece metal bracket and bolts. Note: Separate individual brackets can also be used.
Figure H
Prior to assembling, paint, grind and sand the bolts to age the pieces.
Figure I
14. Place the foam on the seat section and wrap the fabric around the seat and staple to the back of the seat piece.
Figure J
Attach the seat to the chair base with screws.
Figure K
15. As a final touch, add signature bolts and nuts to pre-drilled holes in the back of the chair.

State of Creativity Cover Story for Utopia Joe

Utopia Joe as Producer/Artist was one of six exclusively chosen VIP Creative Ambassadors including Olympic Gold Medal Winner Bart Connor, Governor Brad Henry, Prosthetic Expert/Inventor Jay Martin, Music Composer Jerod Tate and Astronaut Thomas Stafford for the State of Creativity Launch with special televised reel of the upcoming series for The Utopia Joe TV Show for OETA/PBS during a worldwide launch event.

OKLAHOMA CITY - While memory of the state's centennial celebration is still fresh, it's time to put Oklahoma on the path toward becoming an innovative leader for the next 100 years, Oklahoma Creativity Project Executive Director Phil Moss said.
The first step may very well be the official launch Friday of the Oklahoma Creativity Project, a statewide effort to promote creativity in culture, commerce and education. The Chesapeake Energy- sponsored event is scheduled to begin at 6 p.m. at Science Museum Oklahoma, 2100 NE 52nd St.
"We want to create an environment in the state and our partner organizations to have more open attitudes about looking at opportunities for change," Moss said, and by doing so attract creative people and who help improve the quality of life and drive economic development.
"We might examine policies or strategies that may have worked for us in the past, but because of the changing nature of the economy or the changing nature of our demographics, or the use of technology, might suggest that we try something new as we move forward," he said.
The project will focus on education, commerce and culture because those are the three areas that organizers feel they can initiate the longest-lasting and deeply affecting changes, Moss said. Each area will have committees that will identify examples of change that the project advocates.
"What we really don't want to do is create an organization that says, 'We're here to promote innovation and creativity, but we're going to define it and tell you what to do,'" he said. "Because if we do that we're going to miss opportunities to consider approaches we hadn't thought of, and that's the essence of creativity."
Gov. Brad Henry designated 2008 as the Year of Creativity. First lady Kim Henry has been chosen as one of several creativity ambassadors, which include Olympic gymnast Bart Conner, music composer Jerod Tate, fine artist & film maker Joe Bohrer and astronaut Thomas Stafford.
Creativity Project sponsors are the DaVinci Institute, Academy for State Goals, Oklahoma Centennial Commission, the Kirkpatrick Foundation, and Oklahoma A Schools, cited by Moss as an example of creativity in education for introducing arts into the daily school experience.
The 40-member board of directors includes law firm partners, college deans and presidents, business executives, elected officials and other community leaders.
Board Chairman Burns Hargis said in a prepared statement the project will "bring focus to unite Oklahomans in inspiring, harnessing and cultivating our creativity in commerce, culture and education to produce innovations leading to greater prosperity, growth and advancement in our next 100 years."

Oklahoman News Cover Story - Utopia Joe TV Show on OETA/PBS

PBS/OETA show provides utopia for local art community

By JOHN A. WILLIAMS, NewsOK.com

Published - TulsaWorld.com
Joe Bohrer has worn many hats — minister, musician, artist and reality TV star. But his real passion is to help Oklahoma City become known for its art and its artists.

One vehicle for that is the "Utopia Joe” show currently airing on PBS/OETA, a show that has caught the attention of the TLC and CMT cable networks. He’s also made guest appearances on HGTV.

His TV career started in the garage of his northwest Oklahoma City home. With his wife, Tiffany, in her own right a gifted artist, Bohrer began turning out furniture that best can be described as urban art. A friend chronicled the effort by following him around the garage and at art shows.

"I had bigger visions of it,” Bohrer said. "I started seeing incorporating local music and creating an amazing artistic show that would showcase artists in Oklahoma.”

OETA Executive Director John McCarroll saw the potential in the show. So OETA produced 13 shows that were shot largely at the garage, which serves as his studio/workshop. Bohrer also got his wish to include local musicians in the show. One of them, Matt Bowlin, has become a good friend who works on various art projects with "Utopia Joe.”

"He had sent me a message saying he had listened to my music and said ‘I’m doing a TV show and I think you’d be perfect for it,’” Bolin said. "We ended up shooting footage of me singing one of my songs there at his studio and that began a friendship.”

Bohrer, also known as Utopia Joe, said he was encouraged by his parents to nurture his creative streak.

"My entire family was creative in different

ways. I grew up in a very traditional Southern Baptist environment, but my folks were always supportive of whatever I wanted to do,” he said.

That religious background led Bohrer to pursue a masters of theology degree and serve in the ministry for about 15 years. He found that creativity was not always welcome in certain church circles.

"Twenty years ago I wanted to have these churches that are around today — wearing jeans or a T-shirt to church, contemporary music and videos. But it was such a constant battle with people in the church,” he said.

So Bohrer fell back on the one thing he’s always loved — art. His work as a commercial artist landed him jobs with Marvel ComicsL.A. GearVirgin Interactive and Precious Moments figurines.

"We have people who say they want to see Oklahoma grow, but when it comes down to it there is the same resistance there was in the church,” he said. "I just want to do what I can to help spread the word about our art and artists.” By JOHN A. WILLIAMSNewsOK.com

Meet Matt Bowlin.  The following  Biography for Matt Bowlin is found on his website at http://www.mattbowlin.com/

MATT BOWLIN
Singer / Songwriter

Matt Bowlin, a Singer/Songwriter & Celebrity Co-Star on PBS – Reality TV Show “UTOPIA JOE” http://www.utopiajoe.com/ , is a music-driven nomad in pursuit of a dream. After serving six years in the Armed Forces (U.S.M.C), Matt left a promising career in the military to gamble on a different roll, one in the music business.

“I started writing lyrics about a year before my second enlistment was up,” Matt explained, “Until then, it was an undiscovered God given gift and I figured I’d better do something with it. I wanted to learn to play the guitar, study voice, learn to perform and I remembered a college where you could learn to do just that.”

Heading west into the sun and arriving on the Llano Estacado of west Texas, Matt enrolled in the commercial music program at South Plains College in Levelland. The college commercial music program is credited with alumnus such as, LeAnne Womack, Heath Wright (Richochet), Jedd Hughes, Natalie Maines (Dixie Chicks) http://www.dixiechicks.com/ , and many more.

Switching gears from guns to guitars, Matt studied Speech Level Singing (technique method by Seth Riggs) and performed with S.P.C.’s ‘Thursday Nite Live’, one of the college’s most prestigious audition ensembles. Somewhere between then and there, Matt broadened his performing style, and navigated towards Western Swing and was awarded S.P.C.’s 2004-2005 Male Vocalist of the Year in Country/Western Swing.

Accelerated under the influence by the late Waylon Jennings, American Icon, Willie Nelson, Texas balladeer George Strait and songwriters Jim Croce and Kris Kristopherson, Matt’s booming baritone voice fuses the sounds of traditional country, western swing, folk and southern rock. Bowlin’s versatility allows him to cover a range of classics and new-age as well as his own songs.

“I started singing more of my originals after a floor-thumping experience in Luckenbach, Texas, a town made famous by the 1977 number one hit,” Matt explains, “The bartender talked me into picking up the house guitar and singing a tune. It’s like a tradition down there to pass around the house guitar. Everyone plays.” The song Matt sang, “Honky Tonk Fate” (an original), revved up tourists and locals alike. “In a music mecca like Luckenbach, it was amazing to have people clapping, stomping, playing guitars and singing along on the chorus. It was a rush, Matt says.” I was thrilled they were into the song. It was about the best compliment I could have received.”
Since his experiences in Luckenbach and Levelland, Matt has rambled on to write and perform his music in traveling bands. He has been on the road consistently since the spring of 2006, performing in Arizona, Minnesota, Montana, North Dakota, Wyoming, New Mexico, Oklahoma, Texas and Tennessee. He was a district finalist for Nashville Star in 2006, opened shows for Flynnville Train (ShowDogRecords) and Cody McCarver (PLC Records) in 2007, and legendary greats, B.J. Thomas and Billy Joe Royal.

“Opening a show like that was the privilege of a lifetime,” Bowlin said. Chips Moman handed him that opportunity after hearing Matt sing a few duets with another singer at the 2007 National Cornbread Festival. “We were having fun with some oldies and Chips happened to be there,” Bowlin recalled. “He asked Garrett Miles and I if we’d like to come down to La Grange and open for B.J. and Billy Joe with the Memphis Boys as the house band. Jumping at the opportunity, sharing the stage that night I thought, ‘wow, this is the life for me!”
